Today, Donald Trump announced his take over of Washington D.C. police and the deployment of national guard troops.
Activists in the community were quick to mobilize, with thousands converging on the White House this morning to protest.
There’s a lot I want to say about all this — but I just arrived back in D.C. after traveling over the weekend. Upon arriving, I met up with activists outside Union Station who told me Trump intends to begin round ups of unhoused individuals tonight. Right now, the best thing you can do is help share resources.
Organization Spotlight:
Let’s start with Flare. They’re running a 24/7 protest outside Union Station and currently working to help protect the local unhoused community. Swing by their encampment to pick up whistles to distribute to unhoused individuals so they can raise the alarm in the event of their arrest. Not in DC? You can support Flare by donating to them here.
Another wonderful org is the Free D.C. Project. These folks helped launch today’s rapid response protests and have longterm roots advocating for the D.C. community.
Metropolitan Washington Council, AFL-CIO: labor organizers in the DMV
Shut Down DC: grassroots community activists driving local demonstrations
National Lawyers Guild: legal support for activists and protesters. The local DC number is 202-850-0010
On The Ground Coverage:
Finally, besides myself, here are the local D.C. creators you should be following for on the ground coverage:
Make sure to share these resources and help spread the word.
I’ll be hitting you with a more in depth break down on the situation in D.C. tomorrow, so stay tuned.
