We’re a month into Trump’s second term — a month that’s felt like the longest ten years of my life. In that time, a third of Project 2025 has already been implemented. When just keeping up feels exhausting, how the hell do we fight back?
I wish this article was “Stop Fascism in Ten Easy Steps!” But unfortunately, its not. However, I do have some excellent resources to share for where to start.
Local organizing is the way forward. Even during the election, I stressed to my following the need for community action and local grassroots advocacy. Even if Kamala had won, I’d be screaming from the rooftops for people to get involved locally. Now, as we stare down the very real threat to our Democracy, it’s critical.
Okay, I get it. Easier said than done. So let’s get to the doing.
National Orgs To Check Out:
These are national organizations with chapters across the country fighting for progressive values. With a preexisting infrastructure, these groups are great resources for those living near a local chapter.
Democratic Socialists of America (DSA): These folks are the grassroots backbone of the progressive reps we love — folks like Bernie, AOC, and Rashida Tlaib.
Working Families Party: Third party vibes with realistic goals and an understanding of how to build power in the American political system. Their work is centered on uplifting the working class, strong unions, and getting the money out of politics.
Indivisible: Empowering grassroots organization and leading the charge in how we fight Trump over the next four years. Even if you don’t have an existing chapter, these folks are there to help you get the ball rolling.
But Alex, I Live in The Middle Of Nowhere/MAGA Territory
I get it — it’s much easier to jump into an existing group in a large city where a community of organizers is already leading the charge. It’s easier to get involved in places where allies are clearly visible. You may be a blue dot in a sea of MAGAs, but you can still get involved.
Find your people: Building community doesn’t have to look political. Join your local book club, theater group, a cooking class. Where safe to do so, try to get a feel for the political leanings of your coworkers and neighbors. Basically, make friends. The first step to finding allies is straight up just finding the people in your community who share your values.
Remote Activism: While in person organization is always strongest, I get it — it may just not be an option. Thanks to the internet, it doesn’t have to be. You can phone bank for local candidates and ballot initiatives from home — all you need is a cell phone and an internet connection. With primary season for the midterms around the corner, now is our chance to oust establishment Dems and volunteer for progressive candidates.
Don’t Forget Self Care
No, reader, you will not single handedly topple the Trump administration and usher in an era of Democratic Socialism. None of us can take on the rise of fascism alone. And we can’t adequately take action if we’re not taking care of ourselves.
They want us overwhelmed and exhausted — which is why its important to take care of ourselves. Don’t bite off more than you can chew. Start with one group, one issue, one action, and build from there. Some people may have the energy to hit the streets every weekend. Some people may only have the time to get out once a month. Individual impact looks different for everyone. It’s okay to take a weekend to turn off from the news, stop doomscrolling socials, and find some peace.
So get some rest then get out there, champ. We have work to do.
