The Election Results You Need To Know
Democrats swept the 2025 elections - here are the races you should know about
Off cycle elections historically have low turnout and favor Republican victories — but not this year. Despite the government shutdown (or perhaps because of it) Democrats pulled massive victories nationwide. Here’s your rundown of the most watched races;
Virginia
Voters in Virginia just elected a new House of Delegates, Governor, Lt Governor, and Attorney General — and handedly gave Democrats the trifecta they need to push for progress and oppose the Trump administration. Key victories include;
Governor: Abigale Spanberger
Lieutenant Governor: Ghazala Hashmi
Attorney General: Jay Jones
New Jersey
New Jersey has elected a new Democrat governor Mikie Sherrill and is poised to give their general assembly blue majority — a much needed trifecta in the next 3 years opposing Trump.
The Name is Mamdani
M A M D A N I
New York City called their mayoral race within 5 minutes of close of polls, an astonishing feat with ranked choice voting as the process can often take days to call. The self proclaimed democratic socialist Zohran Mamdani has won the election with 81% of women (as of writing at midnight) and an uptick in young men.
This race is of particular attention — will the Democratic establishment embrace the progressive swing or stick to the status quo? Here’s good ol’ Chuck Schumer when asked if he voted for Andrew Cuomo (the Trump endorsed candidate) or Mamdani;
Yikes. As I’ve said, progressive candidates will need to not only fight MAGA, but establishment hacks within their own party. Want to know who you should be backing in 2026? Check out my endorsements so far here;
California Prop 50
Prop 50 is a direct response to Republican redistricting efforts nationwide, most notably in Texas. Redistricting of congressional maps historically happens every 10 years following the national census — until Trump decided he wanted to rig maps to steal democrat seats. When Texas Republicans pushed ahead with efforts to redraw districts to favor Republicans, Democrats nationwide rose up to fight fire with fire.
California voters have passed Prop 50, allowing the state to redistrict in response to Republicans. The measure will allow new maps to be drawn to reclaim seats for Democrats in the U.S. House of Representatives. As if the upcoming midterms weren’t going to be crazy enough.
Maine
I recently wrote about Prop 1 in Maine, an effort to tighten voter ID requirements and roll back access to mail-in voting. The measure has thankfully been rejected by Maine voters.
At that time, I didn’t mention Maine’s Prop 2, a measure to implement red flag laws. In 2023, a mass shooting in Maine killed 18, the worst shooting in the state’s history. Critics were quick to point out that if the state had red flag laws (which permit the removal of firearms from those suffering a mental health crisis or otherwise pose a harm to themselves or others) would have prevented the shooting. Yesterday, Maine overwhelmingly voted in favor of such restrictions. We’ll never know how many lives this measure saves, but we know every single one will be worth it.
Take Aways
With thousands of elections nationwide yesterday it is impossible for me to put an all encompassing rundown together, but here’s what you should take away from yesterday — America is fed up with MAGA and Trump. As of writing this, the government shutdown has now become the longest in history at 36 days. Yet voters made it clear — the pain they feel is due to Republicans. Let’s face it — MAGA could end the shut down right now by extending ACA tax subsidies and fighting to reduce healthcare costs for their constituents. But they’re not, and voters know it.
